Welcome to Grade 7 Mixtures and Solutions. My group is trying to find out which separating method is the best. My group members are thompson888 and ilovelynx. We are going to be putting up information, labs, images, videos, links, and questions. Below is a video and a picture of a distillation apparatus. Distillation Appartus. In the apparatus picture there is distillation flask and it is getting heated from the bottom. Which is making it evaporate. Then the vapour is rising and is going through the big tube. There is cold water going inside of the tube while the vapour is in there. The cold water is making the vapour turn into a liquid. This is called condensing. After all that, all of the vapour pours into the the other side in the glass. That is what a distillation apparartus does. How To Build A Distillation Appartaus To start off you have to find a pair of the the metal stands. Then attach the glass that is going to be filled with a substance, you attach it with the clamps sticking out the side of the stands. After that you put grease on a piece of glass that is a T-shaped, you now slide the piece of glass into the the glass which has the substance. Then attach the big long tube that has two holes on the bottom of it. Clamp it on the middle stand. The hole that is closest to the burner is a place for hot cold water to come out, and the other hole is for cold water to go in. After that attach a round piece of glass. It looks like a test tube but it's rounded at the top. At the bottom of the test tube attach another glass that is going to hold the clean substance. After all that is done you stick a thermometer in the top of the glass holding the substance. Make sure you cover the spots that are not covering there the substance is rising to so it doesn't get out. Then on the holes in the long tube. You have to attach long tubes that lead to big buckets. One full with cold water and one empty. Turn on the burner and you have started your project in distillation. If you don't get what I'm saying watch the video please.
Video On Distillation Where Else Does Condensation And Evaporation Work Together? The water cycle. The sun heats water which turns it into water vapour. Then once the vapour hits the cold clouds it condenses. Which means the vapour turns into liquid. Once the cloud gets really heavy it will rain, snow or hail etc. In scientific words precipitate. Now how does that relate to the distillation apparatus? Distillation Apparatus Lab For You To Try Purpose- The purpose of the distillation apparatus is to seperate a solid from a liquid such as salt from water. Materials- 2 flasks 1 long tube 1 small tube 1 rubber connector 1 rubber stopper with a hole in it 1 burner 250 ml. of salt water Procedure- 1. Fill 1 flask with 250 ml. of water. 2. Slide the small tube into the rubber stopper with the rubber connector attached to the small tube. 3. After all of that attach the long tube to the other side of the connector. 4. At the bottom of the long tube set a flask down. Make sure the water has a clear down hill path to both flasks. 5. Then set the flask that has all of the water in it on the burner. 6. Turn the burner on to high let solution come to a boil. 7. Now sit back and relax this should take around 15-30 minutes. Questions?
1.How is the water turning clean? What is the Scientific Term?
2.Why is the water vapour turning to a liquid?
3.What would happen if there was no stopper?
4.What would happen if there was no small tube?
5.Could this work on the ocean water?
